Active learning to move the pass rate
A new science building built around active learning, with instructor moderation as the deciding requirement.

- 70-85% success rate active learning can reach, vs 60-70%
- 1 in 3 students don't pass gateway science courses

The challenge
A third of students do not pass introductory gateway science courses, and engagement moves the number: faculty cited active-learning techniques raising class success rates from 60-70% to 70-85% when the college presented at UBTech 2016.
The deployment
The campus technology officer evaluated content sharing against two hard requirements: students stream anything from their own devices — video, websites, the phone camera — and the instructor moderates. Moderation disqualified several rivals; Solstice moderator mode previews every share before it goes live.
The outcome
Physics classes now run on the platform: small groups solve a problem, photograph their work with a phone, and share the image to the display for the whole room to discuss. Phones and laptops became the engagement channel instead of the distraction.
